@Raven: It's surprising how difficult it is switching from semi-realism to a more animated type of drawing style. In all honest opinion, it's a lot harder to create a well designed character that's super simplified in comparison to something more realistic.

You literally go through dozens of pages in this class in order to find that "shape" to your character that makes him or her unique in terms of appearance.

@Death: Yeah, that's probably my favorite as well. These expression sheets are really fun to draw. Not to mention some really good practice in terms of getting down emotions, even though they're super exaggerated.

@Toms: Who doesn't like compliments? <3

As for Shala, I'm still going to be going with the concept-art look. Though this time around I want to incorporate more shapes and character personality into the design. I'm thinking this will have to wait until after this semester ends though. Spring break starts next week, but it's looking like I'll be bogged down with a ton of homework the entire time. After that, it's back to classwork and the sort.

In a run about way, I can def see what you mean. I find myself unable to draw convincing chibi/super deformed style lol.

Yeah, he's supposed to be a bit of an odd character. As my teacher put, "he looks like the kind of character you love to hate."

I was basing him a bit off of Jon Lovitz and Nathan Lane from the 06' version of The Producers.

Which by the way, you should watch this song from the movie because it's catchy. That and it has a gay version of Hitler, which in itself is enough reason to watch it.

Is it? Kind of a generic look to him, so I guess he might look like an already existing character. As far as an intentional reference, I wasn't really basing him off of anything aside from Lovitz and Lane.

Thanks, EZ.

Some more costume concepts and designs coming this way. Also playing around with color palettes. These are actually paper doll cut-outs for an illustration assignment with a bunch of smaller pieces. I just scanned the individual pieces and assembled them to show the final product.

I think the next time I start coloring Dorothy, I'll be lightening the outlines around her figure and clothes to look more like the far right figure. The palette design is supposed to be inspired by Mucha, so I think it's a wee-bit dark around some parts here.

Mixture of acrylic, collage and PS.

This style you seem to be doing (for class?) is really so awesome D:
Its sort of got like, a nice retro-1920's feel. Which i think is totally awesome.

Only one...critique, if even that. Likely stylistic, but why do they have mermaid tails? D:

Anyways, the one on the left reminds me of gwen for somereason. maybe the colour...
Even though all of them are literally the same model, the left most one looks more muscular... don't know how that works.

Please say your class requires you to do a full piece in this style for like, a final project?

@Morag: Thanks, Morag. Aside from the art deco-style, Mucha and his color palette is one of my other major references I had to pick for this project - LS Lowry, and Pierre Brissaud the others. Figured I'd finally start laying down color choices for at least one char.

And it's good to see you popping up around these parts again.

@Death: Lol, at the mermaid tails. Since these are supposed to be paper dolls for a mock-magazine layout, I wanted to make a pose that wouldn't be a huge pain in the ass to cut out (i.e. not too many open spaces between areas). That was one of the main guidelines we were supposed to keep in mind. That's why her legs are basically melded together into a simple shape.

As I was cutting her out, I noticed it was still a really tedious process. Originally, those rectangular designs weren't a planned part of the doll. It wasn't until the end when I added those shapes that I realized they would make the "cut-out" process significantly easier and more importantly fun.

Anyways, I can see the resemblance to Gwen you're talking about - especially with her Deldrimor hero armor. And she probably looks a bit more muscular in comparison to the other two because of how I cut out that dress maybe?

And yes, the final char-design project is going to be looking something like this in the end. It won't be a full-scene or anything like that though since we're really only focusing on characters. Though hopefully I'll be able to make some fun little illustrations showing the difference between their personalities.

EDIT: Just to get into the mood, have some Cab Calloway. Even though he came slightly after the Roaring Twenties, these are still pretty awesome songs.

ugh so awesome Dx

And the cutting out makes sense for the shape. Though its not bad the way it is ^^

I look forward to seeing the final project; do you have to take one character and sort of do a more in-depth creation in this style? I'm not too sure what the requirements you have to follow are other than that its based on this particular style.

Also; that cab calloway stuff is awesome. I also like Billie Holiday; shes from the same era as calloway. Nothing like some jazz to motivate art.

Are you talking about those paper dolls where you put on different paper clothes on them (popping out cutouts and using little tabs to make them stay on the doll)? If so, I used to LOVE those when I was little! If that what you're doing? Making the dolls and clothes or am I thinking something totally different?

This is really cool

@Death: For the final project, we're going to have somewhere between 2-3 finalized characters. Anything beyond that will be concept art. The "rules" we have to follow are essentially dictated by the artists we choose for reference. You analyze what you like about those artist and the qualities that stand out. Once you have that figured out, those traits then become the rules on how you'll be drawing.

It's basically to show the importance of artist reference, force you out of your comfort zone, and create interesting designs through a mish-mash of various artistic styles.

So for me, it's Art Deco aesthetic, Art Nouveau color/line quality, and gradients (LS Lowry).

And here's another addition to Calloway: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=niIfeVGaJZw - the singer is no Calloway, but it's a really catchy version of the song.

@Thistle: Yep, you're definitely thinking about the same thing we're doing in class.

@Verene: Agreed, the one of the left is my favorite as well.

@Marsh: Bah, no need to worry about my living situation anymore. That got taken care of a few weeks back, so everything is back to normal now.

@Aero: Cutting is forbidden. It's always been forbidden.

Just kidding, but maybe hold off on printing that out right now since those are the finished products. I have an actual 11x17" page layout with all the costumes and the base design that I still need to add the final touches on. Once I do that, I'll upload that here and you can copypasta to your heart's content.

Popping in here really quick. Quick acrylic painting for illustration class - parody of a master's painting. Took a day and a half.

Off to take a nap now before I had to steamroll through some more homework.
